Shavasan or Corpse Pose - Steps and Benefits

Shavasan means Corpse Pose. In Sanskrit language, Shava means Corpse. This asana should be done at the end after doing all daily yoga poses. The aim behind this asana is to relax the body after getting the heavy stretch to the body of practitioner after doing yoga. We are going to learn Steps and Benefits of Shavasan or Corpse Pose.
The importance of relaxation of the body is well defined in the medial science, but it was actually in practise by Hindu yogis since ancient time.

Lie down on the back and relax your body.
Keep some distance in the legs and keep arms to both the sides of the body. Don’t bend or stretch any fingers of arms and legs. Keep them relaxed.
Then, turn your neck to either left or to right direction but don’t give any stretch, just keep it relaxed.
Now, close your eyes half or fully and concentrate on your breath. Keep breathing normal.
Try to calm your mind slowly and clear your mind of thoughts.
When your mind will actually get out of the thoughts, you will feel sleepy. But, stay awake.

After practising for many days, you will find a different relaxation to your mind in such a way that while practising, if you try to raise your hand, you can’t do it easily. This is actual success of Shavasan.
This asana actually gives a total relaxation to your body and specially mind.

Precautions to take before doing Shavasan - Corpse Pose

There is no such time for this asana but do this asana only after doing all other asanas. Don’t do it in the middle or in the beginning.
If you feel sleepy, just open your eyes for few second and shut them again.
Keep breathing normal.
Beginners – 1 – 2 minutes.
Intermediate – 3 – 5 minutes
Regular – 5 – 10 minutes

Benefits of Shavasan - Corpse Pose

This reduces the physical and mental stress and keeps mind fresh and full of energy.
After regular practise of this asana for few months, it is also useful for meditation.
It is beneficial for people having physical work to relax their body and mind both.
It is also beneficial for women during menstruation because it gives a good effect on their body by giving complete relaxation.
